The Montgomery County Green Futures program is a project
of Montgomery County Lands Trust with major sponsorship
in 2010 from PECO, Univest Corporation,
and Aqua Pennsylvania, Inc.

Inspired by the November 2003 Green Fields/Green Towns referendum and the passage of Pennsylvania’s $625 million Growing Greener II Bond Initiative, the Montgomery County Green Futures program is in its fourth year of offering a multifaceted approach to training and education for local municipal officials and their advisors.

This dynamic series of workshops and celebration events has reached more than 1,300 people throughout the county, offering in-depth analyses of land conservation issues in a variety of engaging and stimulating venues. In creating an energizing and fun environment for the exchange of ideas, Green Futures provides local leaders with the open space tools to deliver what the citizens of Montgomery County want: enhanced quality of life through land conservation and greener communities.

Each year the Green Futures program honors local communities for their outstanding achievements and efforts demonstrating exemplary land protection, effective partnerships, and visionary open space projects.

With a focus on stimulating change at the ground level, Green Futures strives to provide local officials and their municipal advisors with effective open space techniques tailored to the unique needs of their communities. Green Futures is pleased to be able to provide copies of the presentations given at our workshops and events.

Being green isn’t always easy . . .

Got a question? Pick up the phone and call your counterpart in another community to find out how they did it! This is a list of municipal officials,  managers, county and nonprofit partners, and consultants who have agreed in advance to spend time talking with you about open space conservation questions you may have. Many of them have been speakers at one of the Montgomery County Green Futures workshops. They welcome your phone calls and are willing to share their experiences.

In October 2007, Montgomery County Lands Trust, the Montgomery County Planning Commission, and Brandywine Conservancy forged a partnership to study ways to increase the use of the Transferable Development Rights (TDR) tool by county municipalities. Since that time, the partnership has completed the following:

  • 8 community outreach presentations in which the techniques of TDR were explained in detail
  • A final TDR Report detailing the findings of the analysis, survey, and focus group discussions.
  • An appealing 14-minute TDR video shown above, highlighting the successful TDR methods and approaches used by open space leaders in nearby Pennsylvania counties.
